The local Soap Box Derby season runs year round in over 170 cities and communities across the United States and overseas. It culminates with the All American Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio. The goals of the Soap Box Derby program, which have not changed since it began in 1934, are to teach youth some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun.
The Stanwood Camano Island area is very proud to be one of only two locations in Washington, and one of five in the AASBD Region 1 (AK, WA, OR, ID, MT) that holds a Local Soap Box Derby event that will qualify one winner from each of our two local divisions to participate in the All American Soap Box Derby World Championship. The Local Race Program is a race held annually by an AASBD licensed Local Race City Organization. A participant is required to enter and compete in the Local Race closest to his or her residence. The winner of a Local Race is called a “Local Champion” and is eligible to compete in the AASBD®World Championship against other Local Champions.
Launched here in Stanwood-Camano Island in 2008, the founder and namesake of our local derby, Randy Heagle of Windermere Real Estate, continues to be a major sponsor and active member of the committee. “We started the derby in Stanwood to bring together the business community and service organizations for a fun family event that would provide positive interaction with the youth of this community,” Heagle said. “More important than the wonderful spirit of competition the event provides, we welcome the opportunities to promote good sportsmanship and family togetherness. The whole process of building a Soap Box Derby from the initial sorting of the nuts & bolts to the thrill of crossing the finish line offers terrific life lessons.”
